“Just so you know I don’t need to be interviewed,” said a formerly incarcerated Black Panther. He was letting me know it would be an immense privilege to speak with him. This reality check really helped me form who I was looking to speak with in Michigan and the region I was about to cover from the Detroit metro area, the suburbs, and Flint. I wanted to hear from various people in the Blackest city in America so I spent time with Muslim activists, restaurant owners, farmers, musicians, queer elders, and a medley of other fascinating folks from this Midwestern state.
